Lateral Corticospinal Tract. (Image modified with permission from drawings by C. Kaiser). The somatotopic pattern of descending fibers making up the corticospinal tract is similar to that seen in the ascending systems; that is, the arrangement is orderly. The fibers ending at cervical levels (arm & hand movement) are located in the tract more medial than those ending at lumbar levels (leg & foot movement). Just over half of the fibers end in cervical regions, suggesting a greater control over the arm and hand than the leg and foot.
